I’m about to share with you a little known secret about foundations and grant writing. Here it is…I’VE NEVER FILLED OUT A GRANT PROPOSAL UNTIL I ALREADY HAD THE GIFT!

​​I’m serious! The last step I take when securing a gift from a foundation is tackling their grant application forms. Why? Because I always make sure I have enough of a relationship with one of their trustees to help me write it correctly. This occurs towards the end of the relationship building process once the trustee has agreed to present my proposal during their next distribution meeting.

Here’s how it works. See the list below (TOP 100 FOUNDATIONS) and download each foundation’s 990s. This document will provide you the names of every person serving on their board of trustees. (By the way avoid the foundation’s executive director at all costs.) If you don’t have an existing linkage (someone you know who knows them) pick up the phone and cold call each member until you get an appointment. What do you say when you get them on the line? “Jack, I’d like to better understand why you serve on the board and what your personal goals are for the foundation. Is there a time that works best for you next week for a cup-of-coffee!”

Why does this work? First, BECAUSE I PICK UP THE PHONE! Second, NO ONE’S EVER ASKED JACK THAT QUESTION BEFORE!

Once I have the appointment, at some point in the conversation I ask, “Jack, could you mentor me through the appropriate way for our organization to invite your group to make a major gift?”

Jack may then ask, “How much are you thinking?” Because I’ve reviewed several years worth of 990s I know what investment amount they typically give the first time they remit. So I share, “Jack, it would be a privilege to receive a first gift from your foundation. Historically you give $25,000 when you invest for the very first time. I thought you’d like to share a $25,000 gift to underwrite…etc. etc.”
